The CassiniDev project provides an alternative for the ASP.NET development server that comes with Visual Studio. It offers more features and especially is available as a 64 bit build which is required to host and debug ASP.NET applications in 64 bit from Visual Studio without installing an IIS web server.

Basically installing Cassini is easy, you just need to replace some program files of the Microsoft server by those of Cassini. But to quickly switch between different platforms, it’s a bit complicated. And the application directory itself is also a bit hidden. CassiniSwitch now does that installation for you. It contains all Cassini program files and can install them for a specified Visual Studio version in either 32 or 64 bit. The Microsoft server is backed up and can be restored at any time. Moreover, CassiniSwitch tells you which application is currently installed in which version and platform. You can easily change all that with a single click. If the server is still running, it will be shut down prior to installation.

Compatibility: .NET Version 4.0 or newer Windows 8 Windows 7 Windows XP 64 bit

CassiniSwitch can manage the web server of Visual Studio 2008, 2010 and 2012. Visual Studio 2005 works somehow entirely different and Visual Studio 2013 comes with the IIS Express that can be made 64 bit with other inofficial methods. Visual Studio 2015 even has the 64 bit option directly and ASP.NET Core runs in a separate process anyway. This tool is therefore forever obsolete.
